EFL Tips: A League One Six-Pointer Kicks Off This 20/1 Shot

EFL Tips: A League One Six-Pointer Kicks Off This 20/1 Shot

After a break for the FA Cup, the EFL returns and so does Gaz with three selections for the weekends English football action.

Reading v Port Vale

Sat 13 Jan 15:00

This might not look like the sexiest game on paper, but it could have serious ramifications in the battle for League One survival. Port Vale have been pretty comfortable for most of the season and are currently seven points clear of Reading who are in the relegation zone. A Reading win would pull Vale into the battle to beat the drop making this a massive match for both sides. The Royals are unbeaten in their last six league (W2, D4, L0) and that has given them a great chance to secure their League One status, despite an EFL-imposed 4-point deduction.

Port Vale have had a mixed spell of results recently (W2, D2, L2) but I think they come into this game somewhat underestimated by the bookmakers at a price of 5/2. That said, it’s hard to recommend with any confidence given the Jekyll and Hyde nature of Vale’s performances. A stronger bet to me looks to be the draw and both teams to score at 10/3. From a goals perspective, Reading have netted at least once in each of their last 13 league matches. In the same period Vale have netted in 10 (77%).

Sutton United v Barrow

Sat 13 Jan 15:00

I’m always very wary of tagging bets as a “banker” but this one has all the hallmarks. Barrow have lost just one league game since October 3rd, a run of 16 games (W9, D6, L1). That solitary loss came at the hands of fellow promotion chasers Wrexham so can be forgiven. Sutton are rooted to the bottom of the League Two table and are six points from safety. United’s performances at home have been pretty decent, however, they’ve only managed to win on 3 occasions (W3, D4, L6) at the Borough Sports Ground. All the signs point to an away victory and at 21/20 there looks to be plenty of value in backing that.

Grimsby v Notts County

Sat 13 Jan 15:00

Grimsby had a miserable festive period winning just one of their four matches (W1, D0, L3) over Christmas and New Year. Luckily for the Mariners, there’s still a nine-point gap to the relegation zone with both Forest Green and Sutton struggling for form. The big story in this game though is Notts County who’ve all but thrown away their title aspirations in the last month.

Four losses in their last six has seen the gap to table-toppers Stockport grow to nine points and has even cast some doubt on their ability to make the playoffs. Throw in the fact that manager Luke Williams has jumped ship to take the Swansea job and things aren’t looking too good. That said, this is a must-win game for County and they definitely have a far superior squad than their rivals. There’s just enough juice in the 7/5 available for a County win to tempt me and round out this week’s treble.

EFL Betting Tips

Reading v Port Vale – Draw & BTTS @ 10/3 (1 point)

Sutton United v Barrow – Barrow Win @ 21/20 (3 points)

Grimsby v Notts County – Notts County Win @ 7/5 (1 point)

Above in a treble @ 20/1 (1 point)
