EFL Tips: Value To Be Had By Backing Birmingham

EFL Tips: Value To Be Had By Backing Birmingham

After a break for the FA Cup, the EFL returns and so does Gaz with three selections for the weekends English football action.

Stoke v Birmingham

At first glance this looks like a banker home win. Stoke are unbeaten in their last 7 league matches (W2, D5, L0) and face a Birmingham side who’s last Championship victory came over one month ago (13th Dec). I’m not so sure it will be a simple as that though.

The mixed spell of Birmingham results came while Wayne Rooney was manager, a spell that saw The Blues win just two of the fifteen games (W2, D4, L9). In  that period the Midlander’s went from promotion hopefuls to relegation candidates. Tony Mowbray is the new man at the helm and he looks to have City back to near their best. Last weeks’ battling home draw versus Swansea was followed up by a brilliant FA Cup victory over Hull in midweek and confidence looks to be growing. With that in mind I think they’re coming in a little bit under that radar here. At 3/1 there’s plenty of value in the away win and that’s the bet for me.

Gillingham v Forest Green

If you think the Wayne Rooney experiment mentioned above was bad, it’s nothing compared to the Troy Deeney experiment carried out by Forest Green. Deeney took over as manager on Dec 20th and failed to win any of his 6 games in charge (W0, D3, L3). The final nail in the coffin was Deeney slating his squad on his podcast and he was duly sacked in mid-week. That leaves Forest Green managerless, seven points from safety and rooted to the bottom of table.

Gillingham come into this on a three game winning streak and still with valid hopes of securing a playoff spot. If they are to achieve promotion it’s essential they take all three points in matches like this. I normally don’t back odds on but I still think there’s value in the 4/5 offered for a Gillingham win.

Exeter v Cambridge

Neither of these sides have covered themselves in glory this season and both could still be in relegation trouble. As you’d expect from teams in the lower half of the table, recent form is a very mixed picture. Exeter sit just 3 points outside the relegation zone and need wins fast. Historically The Grecians have been strong at home and that’s the angle I’m trusting here. Although this is a bit of a “gut call” the fact Cambridge have won just once away from home all season (W1, D3, L7) eases that concern. Exeter win at 13/10 rounds out the treble

EFL Betting Tips

Stoke v PBirmingham – Birmingham Win @ 3/1 (1 point)

Gillingham v Forest Green – Gillingham Win @ 4/5 (5 points)

Exeter v Cambridge – Exeter Win @ 13/10 (1 point)

Above in a treble @ 15/1 (1 point)
