Despite an ever-growing injury list Real Madrid have jumped into an early lead in La Liga after picking up four wins from four. That is thanks, in no small part, to the record-breaking form of Jude Bellingham. Will Los Blancos continue to set the pace in Spain or can Barca or Atleti reel them in?
Barcelona v Real Betis
Sat 16 Sep 20:00
Barcelona managed to make it three wins on the bounce leading into the International Break and are hot on the heels of leaders Madrid. The goals have also started to flow for the Catalan side having scored 8 in the previous three. However, they have also let in a few too many for their manager’s liking. Having conceded just 20 in the entire campaign last season they already have 4 in 4 in the against column. Meanwhile, Betis are doing what they do best, sit comfortably within the upper end of the table without really troubling the top spots. Seven points from their opening fixtures (W2 D1 L1) sees them sitting in seventh position. Unfortunately, history has not been kind to Los Verdiblancos in this particular fixture. They have been on the losing side in 17 of their last 21 games against their next opponents.
Real Madrid v Real Sociedad
Sat 17 Sep 20:00
Both sides come into this one without a loss on their record. However, Madrid currently sit 6 points above their visitors. Sociedad had a very slow start to the season with three draws in a row before they sparked into life against Granada. The Txuri-Urdinak rattled 5 past the Andalusian side to put their first W on the board. In Madrid there is currently only one name on everyone’s lips. Jude Bellingham could not have wished for a more perfect start to life at the Bernabéu. Five goals and an assist in his nascent career has already endeared him to Madridistas everywhere. He will certainly prove enough of a handful to any visitor’s defence this season even without the support of Vini Jr to add further torment.
Granada v Girona
Mon 18 Sep 20:00
Girona are the surprise package so far. Three wins and a draw sees them sitting in 2nd just 2 points off Real. Although this good run will almost certainly come to an end soon, it will likely continue for one more week at least against a poor Granada side. The hosts have just one win on the board (W1 D0 L3) and that came against Mallorca who currently sit a place below them in 17th. They also shipped a couple of heavy defeats against Atlético and Sociedad, conceding 8 goals across the two games. The visitor’s current run of wins has come against 3 sides in the bottom half of the table, two of which are in the relegation places already. This should mean they are perfectly primed to take the game to Granada as they aim to extend their unbeaten start to the season.
