La Liga Predictions: Big Two Still Trailing Impressive Girona

La Liga Predictions: Big Two Still Trailing Impressive Girona

Savage gives us his thoughts on the pick of the matches in Spain’s Primera División as Girona continue their impressive run at the summit

Las Palmas v Real Madrid

Sat 27 Jan 15:15

Las Palmas are probably more surprised than most to find themselves comfortably in the top half of the table. Their impressive home form has certainly played a significant part in that. Two losses in 10 (W5 D3 L2) on home soil is evidence of a team that is hard to beat. However, the same rules do not always apply when it comes to any team facing Real. Almería found to their cost that even a 2 goal lead is not secure when Los Blancos are on form. The helping hand, or shoulder, that Madrid received on route to victory is a discussion for another day. It is over 12 years since the hosts last won this fixture and it is hard to see them breaking that streak. That being said, they should be able to push the visitors along the way.

Barcelona v Villarreal

Sat 27 Jan 17:30

Barcelona have recovered from a recent blip in league form with 3 wins on the bounce. However, these have not been easy victories by any means. Their last two involved 3 goals scored after the 90th minute. Despite this uptick in form, Barca still find themselves 8 points off top spot albeit with a game less played. Villarreal’s league form could not be much more contrasting. For a team that qualified top of their Europa League group they currently just 5 points above the relegation places. Just 1 win in their last 9 away fixtures points to how this next outing could play out. Xavi’s side may start to struggle late on in what will be their 8th competitive fixture in 23 days. Unfortunately for Villarreal the game may already be out of reach by the time that happens.

Celta Vigo v Girona

Sun 28 Jan 13:00

Celta have just come off back to back defeats by Sociedad in the league and the Copa. Their reward is a visit from the current leaders which will certainly not put a smile on Benítez’s face. The hosts are normally a tough prospect at home but not so this season. Just 2 wins in 11 at Balaídos shows why they are currently battling to stay out of the relegation positions. Their visitor’s situation could not be more different. They have suffered just 1 loss, to Real Madrid, all season and are currently unbeaten on the road (W7 D3). Even more impressive is their goal scoring which has seen them bag 51 goals already. However, despite the home side’s struggles they do not tend to concede many goals in Vigo.

Smart Bets:

Las Palmas v Real Madrid – Real Madrid and Both Teams To Score @ 15/8

Barcelona v Villarreal – Barcelona and Over 3.5 Goals @ 11/8

Celta Vigo v Girona – Girona to Win @ 31/20

Treble @ 16/1
