La Liga Predictions: Catalan Derby Could Decide Second Place

Savage gives us his thoughts on the pick of the matches in Spain’s Primera División as Barcelona look to maintain their grip on second place

Real Madrid v Cádiz

Sat 04 May 15:15

With the league essentially secured and the massive return leg against Bayern in midweek rotation by Ancelotti is almost guaranteed. The bad news for the visitors is that even Madrid’s fringe players can still inflict serious damage. Cádiz have also experienced a wretched season in terms of results. Just 4 wins in 33 outings (W4 D14 L15) shows exactly why they are currently primed to be relegated. They have conceded twice as many goals (46) than they have scored (23) so that certainly does not bode well. The away side will of course be fighting for their league survival which could and some extra determination. However, this Real side has only lost 2 games in all competitions this season. It is unlikely to be 3 after this weekend.

Girona v Barcelona

Sat 04 May 17:30

It is crazy to think that Girona still have a realistic chance of finishing above Barcelona this season. This derby will certainly have a lot more resting on it for the home side this time around. However, Barca will still be smarting over the 2-4 thrashing handed to them in December by the league’s surprise package. One of the primary reasons for their impressive form has been the star centre forward Artem Dovbyk. The Ukrainian has bagged 19 goals so far and is currently leading the Pichichi race. He could find some opportunities against a jaded visiting defence. For Xavi’s men there is still pride at stake. They will certainly not want to compound their trophyless season with being the second best Catalan side. The visitors should just about edge this.

Smart Bets:

Real Madrid v Cádiz – Real Madrid and Both Teams To Score @ 2/1

Girona v Barcelona – Barcelona To Win @ 7/5

Double @ 6/1
