La Liga Predictions: El Derbi Madrileno to shape the rest of the season

Savage gives us his thoughts on the pick of the matches in Spain’s Primera División as Real Madrid go clear at the top ahead of the derby

Alavés v Barcelona

Sat 3rd Feb 17:30

In recent weeks, Alavés have managed to get themselves clear of the relegation places and into mid-table comfort. Three wins on the bounce will have given the Basque side a massive boost heading into this one. Despite having only lost just 1 of their last 6 in the league, the visitors look remarkably shaky. Their incredible capitulation against Villarreal shows how vulnerable they can be. It was also the 5th time since mid-December that Xavi’s side have conceded 4 or more, with two of those resulting in cup exits. Clearly the writing was on the wall for the Barca manager for quite some time. The away side have drawn 5 of the 10 games on the road (W5 D5). It would not be hard to see another one here against a difficult team like Alavés.

Girona v Real Sociedad

Sat 3rd Feb 20:00

Girona were unlucky to see their top spot taken from them in midweek without kicking a ball. With 1st and 3rd playing each other this weekend it could give Girona a chance to return to the summit for another week at least. Standing in their way is a Sociedad side who are on a peculiar run of form recently. They have just 1 win in their last 6 outings (W1 D4 L1). By contrast the hosts are unbeaten in their last 14 (W11 D3). What will worry the Basque side is the number of the goals (52) Los Blanquivermells have scored to date. However, La Real have been miserly enough in defence having conceded just 21 in 22 games. Míchel’s men have been almost unplayable at home this season and they should have the edge in this one as well.

Real Madrid v Atlético Madrid

Sun 4th Feb 20:00

As always when these two giants of Spanish football meet an intriguing contest awaits. The sides have met 3 times already and surprisingly it is Atlético who can claim the bragging rights. In fact the only 2 losses suffered by Real in 32 competitive fixtures have come at the hands of Simeone. That being said the Bernabéu is one of the hardest grounds in world football to get a result at. Even getting a goal on the hallowed turf is becoming increasingly difficult. Los Blancos have conceded just 6 in 10 league outings (W9 D1) and only Almería have managed more than 1. However, in Griezmann and Morata the visitors have two of the best goalscorers in the league. The front two have 24 goals between them so far. The hosts also have some pretty devastating firepower themselves and may just about edge a very tight contest.

Smart Bets:

Alavés v Barcelona – Draw @ 13/5

Girona v Real Sociedad – Girona to Win @ 11/10

Real Madrid v Atlético Madrid – Real Madrid and Both Teams to Score @ 9/4

Treble @ 23/1
