La Liga Predictions: Madrid look to extend their lead at the top

Savage gives us his thoughts on the pick of the matches in Spain’s Primera División as Madrid look to increase their lead ahead of El Clásico

Atlético Madrid v Girona

 Sat 13 Apr 13:00

Atlético finally managed to string together back to back victories with their 2-1 win over Dortmund. However, they still find themselves staring at the wrong end of a 7 point gap to their visitors. Girona secured an excellent 3 points with a 92nd minute winner against a defiant Betis. The away side are not the same team that overturned Madrid in the reverse at the start of the year. However, they have also had a two week break to prepare for their trip to the Metropolitano. Atleti’s only defeat at home came against Barcelona last time out (W13 D1). This does not bode well for Los Blanquivermells. They have won just once on the road in their last 7 (W1 D2 L4). It is possible that the Catalan side will find this a step too far.

Mallorca v Real Madrid

Sat 13 Apr 17:00

Madrid currently sit 8 points clear of their bitter rivals Barcelona who they host next weekend in El Clásico. Ancelotti’s men have not lost a game on the road since September (W7 D4). The home side suffered an excruciating loss on penalties against Bilbao in Copa Del Rey final last weekend. Their form at San Moix has improved in recent weeks. Having failed to win any of their opening 7 matches they have since won five (W5 D1 L2). The visit of Real is always a different prospect compared to other teams. However, the leaders will certainly have one eye on the return leg in Manchester next week. This could be the Islanders best chance to come away with points.

Cádiz v Barcelona

Sat 13 Apr 20:00

Cádiz are just about clinging on to hopes of survival. They are just 3 points off Celta in 17th and could really do with a win. The home fans will not be looking forward to the visit of a Barcelona. Xavi’s side are yet to lose on the road (W8 D6). Barca had a hard fought victory against PSG helped in no small way by Raphinha’s double. The return fixture and the upcoming visit to the Bernabéu may well take precedence. The hosts have won their last two at home including an impressive 2-0 win over Atlético. El Submarino Amarillo have recorded just 4 wins all season. It is therefore unlikely that they will cause the Catalan giants too much difficulty.

Smart Bets:

Atlético Madrid v Girona – Atlético Madrid and Over 1.5 Goals @ 13/10

Mallorca v Real Madrid – Mallorca Double Chance @ 11/10

Cádiz v Barcelona – Barcelona and Under 3.5 Goals @ 6/4

Treble @ 11/1
