La Liga Predictions: Madrid to Maintain Momentum at the Top

Savage gives us his thoughts on the pick of the matches in Spain’s Primera División as Real look to maintain their lead at the top

Barcelona v Getafe

Sat 24 Feb 15:15

Recent history would not indicate there are going to be goals on offer in this one. In fact, the last 4 meetings of these teams has produced more red cards (2) than goals (1). The home side had to rely on a 97th minute Lewandowski penalty to claim the W against Celta. A victory against Getafe could see them leapfrog Girona into 2nd which is the minimum the Catalan fans will expect. The visitors also managed to snatch a late winner against Celta recently but last time out could only manage a draw (1-1) against Villarreal. The Madrid side do not have a stellar away record with just one win on the road so far (W1 D7 L5). However, Los Azulones have only failed to score in 3 of those matches. Barca are far from their best this season and there could definitely be a point up for grabs.

Real Madrid v Sevilla

Sun 25 Feb 17:30

For a team as big as Sevilla they actually have an incredibly poor record at the Bernabéu. Los Blancos have won 16 of the last 18 home games against their Andalusian counterparts. Madrid come into this one off the back of a frustrating draw against their local rivals Rayo Vallecano. A previous draw against the same opposition is one of just two matches in which  Real dropped points at home. The other being a draw against Atlético. The visitors have had a slight uptick in form recently and are currently unbeaten in 4 (W2 D2). This has seen them climb a few places clear of the relegation zone. Sevilla have been able to frustrate some of the big teams in their own backyards this season and could cause their hosts some discomfort. Just not enough to stop them winning.

Girona v Rayo Vallecano

Mon 26 Feb 20:00

Back to back defeats have not closed the lid on Girona’s title challenge but the first few nails have been hammered in. Míchel must now do what any good coach does and pick his team back up for the games ahead. Despite claiming a point against Real last week, the visitors are not in particularly great shape. They have won just once in their last 15 (W1 D6 L8). Surprisingly the record is actually better on the road than it is at home. Their hosts on the other hand have lost just one at home against the leaders at the end of September. Los Blanquivermells have been fairly free scoring this season but there is a feeling that they may be tiring. They might just have enough to get across the line in this one but it could be pretty close.

Smart Bets:

Barcelona v Getafe – Getafe and Draw (Double Chance) @ 15/8

Real Madrid v Sevilla – Real Madrid and Under 3.5 Goals @ 11/10

Girona v Rayo Vallecano – Girona and Under 3.5 Goals @ 7/5

Treble @ 13/1
