Ligue 1: Marseille and PSG to entertain in Le Classique

Ligue 1: Marseille and PSG to entertain in Le Classique

Ligue 1 action returns and Dermot has a 7/1 treble which includes a bet in Le Classique

Ligue 1 returns from the international break with a massive clash to end game week 27. Marseille host PSG at the Vélodrome on Sunday in Le Classique. PSG fans haven’t been allowed at the stadium in this fixture since 2015. OM winning run under Jean-Louis Gasset came to an end at Rennes last time out. PSG are cantering through Ligue 1 and all their focus is now on the Champions League. Kylian Mbappé leaving is proving a headache for Luis Enrique as he trials playing without him.  The week opens this week with a top 6 clash of Lens at Lille.

Punting after an international break is tough to navigate as struggling teams get a chance to regroup. They tend to have less players away which makes for less disruption to their regular training schedules. With that in mind, this week’s selections will be relatively timid.

Lille Vs Lens Prediction

Paulo Fonseca has slowly but surely got some consistency and rhythm into his talented Lille side after a rather slow start to the season. The key to Les Dogues rise has been the goalscoring form of Canadian hitman Jonathan David. 10 of David’s 15 goals in Ligue 1 have come since January which equates to 10 goals in 9 games. Lens are one of the better defences on the road but I don’t see either defence keeping a clean sheet. If Lille score, it’s usually the dynamic David finding the net.

Nice Vs Nantes Prediction

Sun Mar 31st 14:00

Normally I’d be siding with the team with a new head coach but it’s unlikely Nantes will get that “New Manager Bounce” factor. The main reason is the new manager is the man that started as manager last season. Antoine Kombouare returns to the Les Canaries hot seat after an acrimonious exit last May. Two others have tried to revive Nantes fortunes in the meantime.

Nice are 3/4 to win this game such was their poor run of form since January. An excellent 3-1 at Lens just before the international break will have done a lot to remind Francesco Farioli’s side that they are still one of the best in Ligue 1.  If this game was played back  in November it  would have seen the home side priced 2/7 to win the game.

Nice to win @ 3/4

Marseille Vs PSG Prediction

Sun Mar 31st 19:45

All signs point to this game being a win for PSG having 5 of the last 6 meetings in Ligue 1. The note of caution on that angle is that OM are playing far better than they were when losing 4-0 in the reverse fixture in September. New head coach Gasset has revived Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with the veteran striker scoring 5 in the last 4 games. Others like Iliman N’Diaye and Ismaila Sarr are now playing way above their early season standard.

PSG on the other hand have to deal with the Kylian Mbappé/Luis Enrique distraction. Luis Enrique has been dropping Mbappé or substituting him early to ‘prepare for life without him’. Personally, I think he should use the generational talent as much as he can whilst he has him and direct the side’s focus back to football. They will play this game with defensive midfielder Danilo as a starting centre back. He is who I think Gasset will target which should ensure Marseille get on the scoreboard at least. The home rearguard is shaky enough that there shouldn’t be any doubts that the away side scores.
