Ligue 1 Tips: Lyon and Monaco to serve up a Classique

Ligue 1 Tips: Lyon and Monaco to serve up a Classique

Dermot has a big 20/1 treble for game week 30 in Ligue 1

Even though Monaco managed to prolong PSG’s crowning as Ligue 1 champions by another week, it’s an exciting weekend of Ligue 1 action. Lorient will feel they can all but guarantee top flight football with a win over Toulouse given how tough Le Havre’s run-in is. They also know they could be playing a potentially relegated Clermont on the last day of the season. Marseille have to beat visiting Lens to have an outside chance of European football next via the league system (they are in the Europa League semi finals). It’s hard to think their squad has enough depth to fight on both fronts.

Brest face a daunting trip to Rennes to keep their UCL hopes alive. Lille may have to get the points first but Les Pirates have hit a bad run at the wrong time. They have shipped 27% of their total goals conceded in the past 3 games. Making things tougher is that they are also without standout centre back Lillian Brassier. On the plus side, Rennes haven’t been sparkling either with only 2 wins in 8 games in Ligue 1.

A win for Monaco at Lyon will likely ensure UCL football in the Principality this season. Their opponents will look to the complete their Lazarus like revival in Ligue 1 as they aim to sneak into the European places. Having spent 18 weeks in the relegation zone it would be an incredible feat if OL do manage to grace the European stage next season.

Lille face a tricky trip to an in-form Metz. They are in a great position knowing rivals Brest have a tough game also. Paulo Fonseca’s side will once again look to Jonathan David for the goals as the Canadian has scored 11 in his last 11 Ligue 1 games. The remaining European contender Nice face a tricky assignment in Alsace as Patrick Vieira’s Strasbourg side have won 3 of the last 5.

Clermont Vs Reims Prediction

This is the last hurray for Clermont this season one feels. A loss will leave them 6pts behind Le Havre. Or 7pts behind Metz and Lorient depending on this weeks results. They face Monaco (H) and Lyon (A) in their next 2 games so surely everything they have will be put into this game.

The downside of all out attack is their vunerability to the counter attack. Whilst Reims are in terrible form (W2-D5-L5) compared to earlier in the season, Junya Ito will relish the home side leaving space behind the defence. The visitors have only kept 2 clean sheets in those 12 Ligue 1 games, both 0-0 draws.

Over 2.5 goals and Both Teams to Score @ 6/5

Rennes Vs Brest Prediction

Rennes arrested a 3 game losing streak which threatened to end their season with an impressive 3-0 victory over rivals Nantes last weekend. A relatively in-form Les Canaries bearly troubled Les Rennais and should be the boost in confidence Julien Stephán’s side desperately needed.

They catch Brest in a good spot with the visitors having shipped 9 goals in the past 3 Ligue 1 games. Brendan Chardonnet and Lillian Brassier have been the bedrock of the visitors impressive run so far but the latter misses this game. The home side are terrific side to watch when things are going well. If they carry last weeks win through to this week it could be another tough game for Éric Roy’s side.

Rennes to win @ 5/4

Lyon Vs Monaco Prediction

Sun Apr 28th 18:00

If this game isn’t gung-ho I may have to stop watching all sports, let alone football or Ligue 1. Monaco have actually managed 3 clean sheets on the spin but the only sides to concede more and be in the top half are opponents Lyon (9th) and Reims (10th). I don’t see OL not scoring at least twice.

Given how Monaco have played most away game this season they won’t sit back and try grind out a result. Maybe they will take something like a 2-2 draw (which would be ideal) depending on earlier results but there would be no love lost between these sides. Whilst not a traditional derby, it’s a geographically important game and the sides have generally been competing at the top end of Ligue 1 over the past 20 years.

Over 3.5 goals and Both Teams to Score @ 16/5
