Ligue 1 Tips: PSG to maintain Ligue 1 lead after Game Week 18

Ligue 1 Tips: PSG to maintain Ligue 1 lead after Game Week 18

Ligue 1 action returns for 2024 as does Dermot with this is 11/1 treble

Ligue 1 returns from a winter break with PSG top of the table, a situation unlikely to change given the strength of the Parisians squad. It’s been a relatively quite winter transfer window so far with only Lyon showing much appetite for improvement, with €24m spent on 3 players. Given that they are a spot outside the relegation zone this is of no suprise. The delayed 2023 AFCON will disrupt all sides with the likely exception being PSG. Strugglers Lorient have 7 players away, as do Marseille. Monaco and Montpellier are next worst with 5 a piece. Saturday evening sees the intriguing clash of styles when Rennes take on Nice.

Brest Vs Montpellier Prediction

Sun Jan 14th 20:00

Brest have won 5 and drawn one in their last 6 games in Ligue 1 and the visit of La Paillade looks a good opportunity to extend that streak to 6 wins in 7.  The away side have been better recently but were easily brushed aside 3-1 in the reverse fixture. Montpellier have 4 injuries and 5 players on AFCON duty. Even though they have a made a couple of signings it’s unlikely to impact a great deal to already thin squad.

Nantes Vs Clermont Prediction

Sun Jan 14th 20:00

This will into a battle of squad depth with 9 players between the teams at the AFCON. Creative midfielder Florent Mollet could have a field day against a porous Clermont defence (even if they are slightly better on the road than at home). Nantes come into the game on the back of 3 Ligue 1 losses in a row. Away to PSG and Lyon were possibly expected but the defeat to rivals Brest will sting a little. Clermont though have only 1 win on the road all season. I’ll take the even money on offer of them not adding to their away points tally in Loire-Atlantique.

Lens Vs PSG Prediction

Sun Jan 14th 19:45

Lens ran PSG to within a point of the Ligue 1 title last season. Their title aspirations probably ended the day they sold Seko Fofana in the summer. Only 1 point from the first 4 games confirmed this. That said, Franck Haise side is still very good. They were a late goal in the PSV V Arsenal game in the UCL from reaching the last 16. The lost of Salis Abdul Samed to AFCON will make their set-up very open as he performs the “water carrier” role for Les Sang et Or.

Achraf Hakimi is only big loss to the AFCON for PSG. The champions elect haven’t lost in Ligue 1 since mid September. A facile win the Coupe de France should have blown off any winter break cobwebs. This should be a straight forward win for Luis Enrique’s side. They do give up enough soft goals to suggest the home side will at least get on the scoreboard once.
