Ligue 1 Tips: Tough away trip for leaders PSG as Monaco welcome Lyon on Friday

Ligue 1 Tips: Tough away trip for leaders PSG as Monaco welcome Lyon on Friday

After going close for a couple of weeks, Dermot is looking to land his 19/2 Ligue 1 treble

Gameweek 16 is bookended by games featuring four of Ligue 1’s biggest clubs from the past two decades. The week begins when Monaco host Lyon and concludes with PSG’s trip to Lille. OL won last week to put them a victory away from potentially exiting the relegation zone. Monaco beat Rennes to keep their outside title hopes alive. The title race itself could be really shaken up if LOSC manage to beat Luis Enrique’s Ligue 1 leaders on Sunday evening. The home side will need to do so without Canadian marksman Jonathan David. The Parisians will have Arnau Tenas making his debut in goal as Keylor Navas is injured and Gianluigi Donnarumma is suspended after getting sent off last week at Le Havre two weeks ago.

Lens Vs Reims Prediction

Lens will be on a high after securing Europa League qualification having beaten Sevilla 2-1 on Wednesday in the UCL. This might not seem like a big deal but this team was trounced 6-0 by Arsenal in their previous UCL outing. In Ligue 1, Le Sang et Or are creeping into contention for the European spots for next season after a disastrously slow start. Elye Wahi still isn’t getting the goals that people would have thought but his contribution to how Franck Haise’s side play is valuable, albeit hard to measure. In his last 5 starts in Ligue 1, Lens have a W4-D1-L0 record.

Reims great start is threatening to unravel. They have lost 3 of their last 4 in Ligue 1 with hugely successful manager Will Still now becoming a distraction. He met with Sunderland’s owner during the week to discuss taking over the English side without consulting his own board. The feeling is both parties could end up splitting. Given that Still is a huge part of Reims recent success and Ligue 1 competitiveness, an off-field distraction is the last thing needed for a trip to Stade Bollaert-Delelis.

Nantes Vs Brest Prediction

Sun Dec 17th 12:00

Another week, another Derby de la Bretagne. And also another home team punt as Nantes are W4-D1-L1 in all competitions since 2021 against Brest. The away side are flying high in 5th position but a look at their form shows they have had a great run of fixtures over the past 10 weeks. Les Canarias will feel they should have at least gotten a draw in Paris last week to back up beating the then league leaders Nice the week before. Personally, I was bemused by the timing of the sacking of Pierre Aristouy (I thought he should have gone sooner). The home side have shown enough since he’s left to suggest they are indeed a lot better than 7pts difference between them and their opponents.

Nantes to win @ 13/8

Marseille Vs Clermont Prediction

Sun Dec 17th 16:05

Except for a draw with Toulouse, Marseille have beaten teams from the bottom half 8-0 in three games. OM had a tough game against Brighton on Thursday in the Europa League. The stats say they didn’t play well but the eye test said they were plenty competitive against a side 8th in the EPL. Gattuso’s squad also has a little bit more depth than meets the eye. They have more than enough to beat a team that always look good on stats but have no end product at either end of the field.
