Premier League Tips: Matchday One

The 2022/23 season is back with a bang after Arsenal snuck past Man City in the curtain raiser and our European football expert LB is here to share his best EPL bets every week.

Arsenal v Nottingham Forest

The Gunners will be feeling good about life after an entertaining if undercooked win over City in the Community Shield. They offer little value at 1/5 so I will be looking at the shots market instead. Leandro Trossard looks overpriced for 2+ SOT at 3/1. The Belgian came on and scored (sort of) against Man City in the Community Shield and all summer he has looked intent on scoring more goals. He may not make the first eleven on Saturday, and I would suggest availing of Bet365’s “void if player does not start” option, but either way, I expect him to get his two shots. Arsenal should make light work of Forest, and if they take an early lead Arteta will ring the changes. If they are chasing a result he should do likewise.

Official Premier League Pick: Leandro Trossard 2+ SOT @ 3/1

Bournemouth v West Ham

Sat 12 Aug 3:00 pm

Bournemouth have gone about their summer business with aplomb and should be much improved. Romain Faivre seemed to find his feet at Lorient and could give the Cherries an attacking threat they sorely lacked last season. Justin Kluivert played his way into a regular at Valencia and will shore up a leaky rearguard.

The good news for West Ham is they might be about to make their first signing of the summer. The bad news is that the signing in question is Harry Maguire. As outlined in my season preview, I have serious concerns about the Hammers. They looked a shambles in preseason and I do not see them ready for the season at all.

Official Premier League Pick: Bournemouth To Win @ 15/8

Brentford v Tottenham

Sun 13 Aug 2:00 pm

Spurs will surely take some time to get used to Ange Postecoglou’s approach and their pre-season results have been inconsistent. For the record, I put no weight on pre-season results, but it is always useful to see what approach a new manager will take. Postecoglou is clearly going to remold the Spurs squad into his preferred shape and it could take some time to click.

Despite preparing for life without star goalkeeper David Raya I think we can expect more of the same from Brentford this season. They picked up plenty of impressive wins as underdogs last season including 5 wins against the top six.

My original pick here was Brentford to win and BTTS at 4/1 but I will change that now to a straight win. Spurs left Kane out of their Joan Gamper Trophy game against Barcelona and that’s reason enough to doubt their ability to score. The Harry Kane saga rumbles on and Richarlison’s lack of goals has been well-publicised. If by some miracle Kane announces he is settled and staying before Sunday then I will personally add BTTS to my bet.

Official Premier League Pick: Brentford To Win @ 15/8

Smart Bets

Arsenal v Nottingham Forest: Leandro Trossard 2+ SOT @ 3/1

Bournemouth v West Ham: Bournemouth To Win @ 15/8

Brentford v Tottenham: Brentford To Win @ 15/8

The above in a treble is at a little over 30/1 (0.5U) with Bet365.
