Serie A Tips: Back A Debut Goal For The Young Pretender

Serie A Tips: Back A Debut Goal For The Young Pretender

Serie A is finally back and Enzo is rearing to go with four Italian football betting tips for the opening weekend of fixtures

Genoa v Fiorentina

Sat 19th Aug 19:45

Genoa, Italy’s oldest football club, have suffered a lot in recent years. They spent the majority of the last decade hovering around the foot of the table, narrowly avoiding the drop until finally in 2022 their luck ran out and they were relegated to Serie B. However, the Grifone only spent one season in the second division and are now back in their rightful home. Genoa’s last high point was all the way back in 2008/09 when Argentinian striker  Diego “il Principe” Milito lead the club to a 5th place finish. Now, the city may well have a new Prince in the form of Mateo Retegui, another Argentine of Italian descent. Retegui had a formidable record of 30 goals in 48 appearances for his former club Tigre and has scored 2 in 3 for the Italian national team. It would be great for Genoa and the Azzurri to once again have a quality striker in their ranks so, a bet with the heart, Mateo Retegui to score anytime @ 9/4 on his home debut.

Sassuolo v Atalanta BC

Sun 20th Aug 17:30

Atalanta made a tidy profit by selling young Danish frontman Rasmus Højlund to Manchester United for a fee of £64 million. Gian Piero Gasperini wasted no time in poaching the Italian Ibrahimovic, Gianluca Scamacca, from under the noses of Roma and Inter. Scamacca failed to replicate the form he showed at Sassuolo during his time at West Ham but he remains one of the most promising talents in Italian football and his signing could turn out to be the buy of the season. The big forward scored the first goal of the match on his debut for the Bergamaschi and is available at 11/2 to do the same again in his first competitive start. I am not going to risk tipping a first goalscorer on the opening weekend of the season though and instead I’m backing a straight Atalanta win @ 11/10. La Dea were one of last years fast starters and were just 2 points shy of Napoli on matchday 10 before eventually fading away in the latter half of the campaign.

Lecce v Lazio

Sun 20th Aug 19:45

Last season’s runners up take on one of this season’s relegation favourites at the Via del Mare. Not a whole lot has changed for either side except for Lazio’s Milinkovic Savic being seduced by the Saudi Riyal and hightailing to Al Hilal. Japanese international Daichi Kamada, along with other exciting young prospects, have arrived to fill the hole so I see know reason why Sarriball won’t be in full swing right from the get go. Lazio win @ 21/20 is the bet.

Udinese v Juventus

Sun 20th Aug 19:45

Apart from the mind-numbingly boring football, one of the standout features of Juve’s 2022/23 campaign was their ability to keep a cleansheet. Nineteen of the Bianconeri’s league victories came without their opponents finding the net. I’m banking on that trend carrying over into this season and backing Juventus win to nil @9/4 again here.

Smart Bets

Genoa v Fiorentina: Mateo Retegui Anytime Scorer @ 9/4

Sassuolo v Atalanta: Atalanta win @ 11/10

Udinese v Juventus: Juventus win to nil @9/4

Lecce v Lazio: Lazio win @ 21/20

The self-proclaimed Italian Stallion. Our boots on the ground so to speak. TheACCAdemic’s Serie A Supremo. His time as a Roma fan has led him to the “hard to support” end of betting and he is no stranger to tipping an unders bet or a draw. Don’t let that put you off. Week in week out Enzo finds value in Italy by avoiding the big names and ploughing his own furrow. To this day he remains the only man in Ireland to own a jersey with Philippe Mexès on the back.
